The part that the rotor is made from can be made out of many different materials. Some examples include forged steel, aluminum, cast iron, and nickel silver. The amount of friction created between the brake pads and the rotor will depend on the type of material used.
Ceramic brake pads have a very strong ceramic compound that acts as a buffer between the wheels and the brakes.
The compounds allows for extreme pressure to be exerted onto the brake dust without causing damage to the rotors or pads. These pads do not offer the amount of friction material that the rotors on the cars have. Rotors are also able to lock up when there is no enough brake dust. This means that the wheels cannot be turned so the brakes need to be applied.
Non-metallic pads will have a lot less friction material.
It is comprised of a rubber compound that has a thin layer of metal flakes in the center. The metal flakes are not able to induce enough heat onto the pad itself to cause damage. Rotors are typically made out of hardened cast iron or aluminum. They will have a small amount of friction built in them that will allow them to work properly with this type of pad. These pads will not work with the ceramic ones because they will not create enough heat to work with.

It is important to remember that drivers should only change their pads if they are working properly. This means that they must be able to effectively control the rotors and cylinders with little or no resistance. If they are making a lot of noise or creating a great amount of friction, then they need to be replaced immediately.
To change the brake pads on your own, you should first make sure that both the brake calipers and the rotor are cold.
